Parents, of all learners at Delta Primary, are reminded that the feeding scheme remains accessible to all learners of Delta primary, whether the learner is attending for the day or not. It is, therefore, very important that parents liaise with the respective class teachers with regards to the feeding scheme on the days when the learner is not required to attend. The Food handlers shall make the necessary adjustments according to the numbers received for feeding on the day.
LEARNER ATTENDANCE STATS
As highlighted in previous newsletters we are extremely concerned about the poor attendance of learners during the course of the academic year. Please, peruse the table below which indicates the attendance statistics for the week. Based on the statistics below it clearly indicates a challenge, that if left unchecked could be prove to be challenging for the learners concerned.

COVID 19 COMMUNICATION
Parents, be advised that in the event of a teacher needing to isolate due to covid-19 protocols, that the teacher will be in direct contact with the specific affected class. Learners attached to the class will be able to collect the missed school work on Fridays so as to ensure that the curriculum pacing is maintained. While teachers are all following the streamlined curriculum commonly referred to as ATP`s ( Annual Teaching Plans), curriculum coverage will be affected due to specific grade context and the pace of individual classes.
SUSTAINING THE CULTURE OF READING
It is well documented that learners who engage in regular reading statistically perform at a higher cognitive level than their non-reading peers. We take this opportunity to encourage all our learners to continuously engage in reading to build and improve their own levels of vocabulary and comprehension. This medium-term investment in their own development will surely lead to massive returns in the future. Our learners are encouraged to read hardcover books/ e-books of personal interest to develop themselves. Teachers have also issued grade-specific vocabulary lists so that learners may utilise the lists to improve the spelling with the intention that the learners use these new words when constructing sentences and writing stories. Please enquire from the respective teachers if your child has not received his/her list of spelling words.
GREENSHOOTS ACCESS
Parents, be advised that the link for the green shoots online mathematics program has been added to the landing page of the school`s website. Learners are now able to click on the link which will direct them to the green shoots online mathematics program. Learners will require their username and password to gain access to the online platform. Learners may enquire from their respective class teachers about their green shoots access codes. All learners from grades three to seven have access to the program which is CAPS-aligned and will greatly support the learners in their mathematical understanding.
LEARNER EMAIL ACCESS
All learners should currently be in possession of their very own email account of which the address was issued by the class-teacher in 2020/2021. Accompanying the email account details, learners would have received an instruction page on how to access the email account. I wish to encourage parents to assist and get behind this initiative by actioning the suggestions as a matter of urgency. Parents/learners who have not received their email MUST contact the current 2021 class teacher to gain access to their learner email by sending a short note to the class teacher. Your action will enable the school to seed a digital communication strategy amongst parents and children, which would yield marvelous benefits for all associated with our school. Parents and learners are encouraged to use the email address and register for the school newsletter. Parents and learners, we encourage all who are connected to the school to regularly interact with the school website as it will inform our digital strategy in the forthcoming years.
SCHOOL FUNDRAISER

Learners and parents are reminded of the civvies day planned for Tuesday 31 August ( Group 1) and Thursday 2 September ( Group2). The food combo and civvies includes: a hotdog, cooldrink, and doughnut at a cost of R25.
Thought for the day
“ I alone cannot change the world. But I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples“ – Mother Teresa
We welcome all our learners and teachers back after the school vacation. We look forward to a constructive term and appeal to all our parents to assist and ensure that the core business of education is prioritised in the lives of their children. Please, examine and discuss the contents of the first term report with your child, giving praise where deserved and encouragement where needed.
LEARNER ATTENDANCE AND ACADEMICS
The second term is packed with academic demands and under the current COVID context simple daily tasks and expectations have become a huge challenge for learners and adults alike. Learners should apply themselves to ensure that they keep books up to date, complete tasks, homework and come to school ready to learn. Learners who sacrifice time and apply themselves can expect a good report at the end of the term.
It is with concern that we note too many learners not adhering to their attendance schedule. Learners are required to be at school as per the attendance roster. What we have detected is that learners attend once in the cycle, or worst case scenario, not at all for a complete week. This is creating HUGE ACADEMIC BARRIERS. I MUST APPEAL TO OUR PARENTS TO ENSURE THAT LEARNERS ARE PRESENT WHEN THEY ARE REQUIRED TO BE AT SCHOOL. As winter approaches, please do not keep learners at home if they are in good health, send them to school as this will only benefit them. Every single child`s future depends on a good educational foundation.
TOP COLLECTORS
We congratulate the grade 4A class for being the Top collecting class for 2021. The learners will each receive a party-pack on the 18th-20th of May 2021.
SPUR TREAT
We congratulate the following learners who will be treated to a Spur Meal on the 17th of May 2021 after their above average collected totals.

RETURN OF COLLECTING LISTS
Parents are reminded that all collecting lists are required to be returned to the school during the course of the week. Should a collecting list have been lost, parents are required to write a letter indicating the loss of the collecting list. While the period for collection has concluded, we still wish to encourage parents to make voluntary contributions to the collecting list.See the collection stats below in relation to non-contribution.

ASCENSION DAY
Be advised that the school will be closed on ASCENSION DAY – the 13th of May 2021.
Thought for the day
“The time is always right to do what is right.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.
The visit of `Small Paul`, who spoke and motivated all the grade 7`s of 2021 was noteworthy this term. His presence was indeed needed as learners returned in a atmosphere of uncertainty. His reminder that the creator wants the best for all us was well received by all in attendance.
Our teachers are to be applauded for brilliantly managing the return of learners on the 15 February 2021. Without their continued commitment to the school, we would not be able to be functional at any level of the organisation..
Support for the collecting list was measured, we were able to raise an acceptable amount of finances for the school.
Our learners were wonderfully spoilt receiving marshmallows over the Easter period, a kind donation of hot-dogs and popcorn as part of learner wellness. This is evidence of the commitment of staff to positively impact the lives of all learners at school.
The feeding scheme was able to continue feeding vulnerable learners as well as community members at large. the ladies in the kitchen have done a sterling job this term and continue to ensure that vulnerable learners are attended to.
The continued outreach all our learners are recipients of including Hot-dog day, popcorn day, book character day, library day continues to add value to the learning experience of each and every learner at Delta Primary. As our focus remains as always that every learner must be provided with top quality cost effective education.
CONCLUSION OF SGB ELECTIONS
The process of SGB elections was concluded on the 14th of April 2021. We express appreciation to the parents who exercised their right to vote. Below is the list of names, of the newly elected SGB.
Parent component: L. De Mink, E Solomons, J Woodland, T Koenze, D Johnson
Teacher component: C Naude/Fischer, D Williams
Public Service: A Percival
LEARNER WELLNESS
During the course of last week, staff members prepared popcorn for the learners at Delta. This was initiative as part of a long term programme, to address the mental wellness of the learners. Teachers are still managing the effects of the post lock-down fallout, as we detect that many learners are visibly withdrawn and struggle on a daily basis to orientate themselves. We also wish to appeal to all our parents to assist teachers by speaking and interacting with their children. More importantly, to assist their children in completion of homework and assigned tasks. Many learners are struggling with reading and basic mathematical skills which is the foundation for academic competence in further grades. Regular practice would ease these challenges which create learning barriers. Teachers are attempting to provide remediation while the learners are at school, however this must be supported at home.
COLLECTING LISTS
We say thank-you to all the learners/parents who have made a voluntary donation on the collecting list. We are cognisant of the challenging economic climate and therefore do not trivialize your financial contributions. Our financials reveal that far too many learners have not made an attempt to make a contribution. Delta Primary is a no-fee school and subsidised by the state. For the school to engage in special projects and to enable the school to sustain SGB posts going forward, we will require a positive stream of financial contributions throughout the academic year. Your positive financial contribution enables to add value to each child`s academic experience.
LEARNER AND TEACHER ASSISTANTS
The management of SGB of Delta primary thank the teacher and general assistants for their service rendered over the past 5 months and wish each assistant everything of the best going forward
LEARNER SAFETY
We wish to make a special appeal to all our learners and parents to ensure that our boys and girls remain safe during the 1-week vacation. Learners must inform their parents and guardians as to their whereabouts at all times. Learners making their way to the beach or near water activities are also reminded to take extra precautions as accidents around water happen so quickly.
COLLECTION OF REPORTS
All reports may be collected on the 22nd of April from 11:00 am. Reports will be issued to learners who are at school.
DISMISSAL
Learners will be dismissed at 11:00 am on the last day of the term (23 April 2021)
TERM 2 COMMENCEMENT
Term 2 commences on the 3 May 2021 and is concluded on the 9 July 2021. For the week 3 May – 7 May learners in grade 1-7 will be dismissed at 13:00 (Monday to Thursday) and at 12:20 (Friday). Learners return to school Group 1 ( Monday and Tuesday) Group 2 (Wednesday and Thursday). Please note that Group 2 will be required to attend on the first Friday (7 May) as well as the second Friday (12 May). Parents, please check the learner attendance programme for term 2 2021 below:

END OF TERM 1
Thought for the day
That`s been one of my simple mantras – focus and simplicity. Simple can be harder that complex. You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But its worth it in the end. Because once you get there, you can move mountains` – Steve Jobs
On Thursday the 25 of March 2021, a group of our learners attended a library information session as part of the Retreat Library Awareness Programme. Our learners did a sterling job as ambassadors for the school. The learners were accompanied by Mrs. N August our school librarian.
RETURN OF LIBRARY BOOKS AND TEXTBOOKS
We are encouraging all our learners to ensure that all library books which are still in your possession be returned as a matter of urgency. All our library books have been accumulated at huge financial cost to the school. Parents, please assist in this process.
DELTA FOOD GARDEN
Our food garden project is coming along nicely and we were able to harvest some of the produce. The recent picture is evidence of the awesome job done by our in-house gardener Mr Fred Petersen. Representatives of the Feeding Scheme have visited the site on two occasions and have expressed their satisfaction with the development of the garden project. It is part of our long term plan to ensure that the food garden is sustainable and that the project has financial longevity as one of the project outcomes.
VIOLENCE IN THE COMMUNITY
The continued violence in the community has been a singular narrative for the past few weeks and it has also negatively impacted our daily operations at school. In this regard I wish to recommend the following course of action in the event of gang violence. Should the gang violence erupt while learners are on their way to school, we recommend parents exercise their discretion and ensure learner safety first.
EASTER CELEBRATIONS
We wish all our parents and learners a peaceful passion tide over the next few days as we enter into the Easter-break.
Thought for the day
“If you are working on something that you really care about, you don’t have to be pushed.“
It was with excitement that we welcomed all our learners back after a long vacation due to the lock down. We are happy to report that COVID-19 orientation and logistical arrangements for the week were excellent and we were able to run our protocols with military efficiency. Learners who required masks were issued with masks. All learners were orientated around the health protocols. I was extremely proud when a grade 1 learner reminded his class-mates to maintain social distance while screening was happening. It validates that our collective reminders are taking root.
All learners (Grade R -7) will be dismissed at 12:20 on a Friday. There will be no 2nd interval on a Friday.
Gates open at 7:30 sharp to commence screening.
2021 SGB ELECTIONS
Be advised that fresh SGB elections are scheduled for the 23rd of March 2021. We wish to encourage all parents who are willing to serve the school at a governance level to avail themselves during the nomination process.
LEARNER ATTENDANCE TERM 1 – 2021
Learner attendance for the groups is accessible on the school website under newsletter 1 of 2021
DELTA SCHOOL CALENDAR 2021
Delta school calendar is available on the school website, on the home- page, events calendar.
IMPLEMENTATION OF FULL UNIFORM IN 2021
Parents are hereby informed that all learners will be required to wear the official school uniform as of 2021 ( Monday to Friday). Learners will ONLY be allowed to wear their civvies on Fridays (when informed) as part of the usual civvies days which will have a small fee attached.
HEALTH PROTOCOLS
During the 2020 academic year we have invested time and manpower to ensure that our school follows all health regulations as directed by the health and educational departments. As COVID compliance-officer I am satisfied and confident in the work done by the COVID COMMITTEE. The committee has ensured that the following actions happen with a high degree of vigilance.
The screening of teaching staff, support staff and visitors to the school.
Ensuring the sanisitising of all classrooms, ablution facilities and venues on a daily basis. Coupled with daily monitoring of these actions.
Ensuring that any individual who displays flu-like symptoms/fails the screening process is directed to a health facility.
Monitoring all staff, learners, support personnel and visitors, and ensuring that mandatory isolation is completed as per government regulations.
WE ARE THEREFORE APPEALING TO ALL OUR PARENTS TO ALSO BE VIGILANT IN EXERCISING COVID PROTOCOLS BY DOING THE FOLLOWING:
Refrain from sending learners to school after they have failed the screening process (the screening questions are available on the school website under the TAB – Our school- COVID 19.
Be forthcoming with the school with information in relation to being in close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. Bear in mind – A RESPONSIBLE CITIZEN WILL DO THE RESPONSIBLE THING TO KEEP HIMSELF/HERSELF AND OTHERS SAFE.
Ensure that our loved ones wear a mask that fits their face, is clean and sterilised at the end of each day. Teachers shall supply learners with a mask where the need arises and as per departmental instruction.
Ensure that our loved ones maintain good personal hygiene by washing/sanitising their hands at all times.
When collecting learners at school – WEAR YOUR MASK.
Maintain social distance when collecting learners at school.
ISSUING OF EMAIL ACCOUNTS / ONLINE PRESENCE
All learners should currently be in possession of their very own email account which was issued by the class-teacher in 2020/2021. Accompanying the email account details , learners would have received an instruction page on how to access the email account. I wish to encourage parents to assist and get behind this initiative by actioning the suggestions as a matter of urgency. Parents/learners who have not received their email MUST contact the current 2021 class teacher to gain access to their learner email by sending a short note to the class teacher. Your action will enable the school to seed a digital communication strategy amongst parents and children, which would yield marvelous benefits for all associated to our school. Parents, we encourage all stakeholders who are connected to the school to regularly interact with the school
