In todays edu-info post we review the importance of doing baseline assessment with a special focus on learners in the foundation phase. Lets start with the obvious question, namely
What are Baseline School Assessments?
Baseline school assessments are standardized tests or evaluations conducted at the beginning of a school year, term, or instructional period. Their primary purpose is to establish a benchmark or baseline for a student’s knowledge, skills, and abilities in specific subject areas or domains. These assessments provide teachers and educators with valuable data on each student’s starting point, allowing them to tailor instruction, identify learning gaps, and plan appropriate interventions.
Why Are Baseline Assessments Important?
Baseline assessments play a crucial role in the education system by providing valuable insights into students’ knowledge, skills, and abilities at the beginning of a new academic year or instructional period. These assessments offer numerous benefits that impact teaching and learning:
In the example the teacher has given the learners the instruction to draw a picture of themselves. Below you will see some of the work the learners have returned to the teacher. Now give some thought as to what each picture reveals about the baseline knowledge, skill and ability of these foundation phase learners.

PARENT AGM
The overwhelming attendance of our parents at the parent AGM on the 20 January 2025 is a testament that our loyal parents are committed to our school. Delta Primary remains a place of development and a beacon of excellence amidst the challenges. Parents on behalf of the staff, SGB we thank you for your support and commitment to the vision of the school.
VISION STATEMENT: `Through diligence and perseverance we shall strive to nurture, foster and develop the full potential of everybody to ensure the prosperity of a stable, harmonious society.`
GRADE 7 – BATTSWOOD ART CENTRE COLLABORATION
Grade 7 parents were informed during the grade meeting, that our grade 7 learners have been given the unique opportunity to be part of the Battswood Art Centre experience on a weekly basis. Over the last 5 years our learners did not have access to the specialist subjects , one of them being Creative Arts. Through the collaboration of the Art Centre, we have created value add for the Grade 7 learner experience. Learners will make their way to Battswood Art Centre as part of their co-curricular programme every Monday from 14:00.
CAPE OF GOOD HOPE LIONS CLUB
We are extremely grateful for the kind donation of school bags, equipment and school shoes which was gifted to the school on Tuesday 20 January 2025 by members of the Cape Of Good Hope Lions Club.

ISSUING OF SURFWALK LISTS
During the course of this week our learners were issued with their 2025 surfwalk lists. As in the past we are encouraging our learners to collect at the minimum R150 per learner to book their place on the bus. The walk is planned for 20 March 2025. We communicated at the parent meeting that the cut of 3x teaching posts at our school has challenged class sizes generally at our school. In order to mitigate the potential assault on the quality of education at our school. We have purposed our mind to focus on raising sufficient funds to ensure quality is not compromised while we sail on troubled waters. We have the power of the collective at the oars and we are confident we will be successful.
We have earmarked the following incentives for learners who exceed the minimum collecting amount of R150 per child.
- TOP COLLECTOR WILL BE GIFTED WITH A TELEVISION
- LEARNERS WHO COLLECT R350 – WILL RECEIVE A SPUR BURGER MEAL
- TOP COLLECTING CLASS WILL RECEIVE A FREE CIVVIES DAY, HOT DOG AND TREATS
- LEARNERS WHO COLLECT R500 AND MORE WILL HAVE THEIR NAMES ENTERED INTO A SPECIAL DRAW TO WIN AN AIR FRYER

WELCOME
A special welcome to all parents and learners at the beginning of the 2025 academic year! All our learners have settled in beautifully and we anticipate a very productive first term. The grade R parents who enrolled their little ones were absolutely fantastic. As of 08.30 we were able to commence formal school activities. We are extremely impressed with the level of maturity shown by the parents and this can only serve as a positive platform for our interactions. As this is the beginning of the academic year, it is our sincere desire to ensure that all our learners put their best foot forward and show what positive girls and boys they can be.
Parents play an invaluable role in the relationship between the school and the learner. Let us ensure that our conversations and interactions are positive at all times.
SCHOOL VALUES
The school values must be espoused by all who interact with the school. We therefore wish all staff members, learners and parents to display the following organisational values when interacting within the school.
D – DISCIPLINE
E – EXCELLENCE
L – LOYALTY
T – TEAMWORK
A – APPRECIATION
LEARNER STATIONERY
Learners at Delta Primary receive the required stationary free of charge. However, The school requires that the items on the school stationery list which was issued with the report be attended to as a matter of urgency. If everything has already been attended, we then express our thanks and appreciation for your cooperation. Learners have been issued with all writing materials, pens, pencils etc. This was to ensure that day 1 commenced effectively.
PARENT MEETING
Please, be advised that we will have our first mandated parent AGM on Monday the 20 January 2025 @ 18h00 in the Main Hall. We would like all our parents to be in attendance as important information will be shared with you.
PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT
We wish to make a special appeal to all our parents to ensure that our learners are supported when they bring school work home. Learners will remain motivated and focused, if parents show an active interest in the academic progress of the learners.
Challenges in human relationships must be addressed openly, fairly and honestly with the focus on solving the problem and not escalating the problem.
GENERAL OPERATIONS AND LEARNER SAFETY
All parents are required to observe the following procedure when interacting with the school.
- To collect and drop- off learners at the gate and not in front of their individual classes. This measure is to limit the movement of visitors onto the premises and also serves as a safety measure. Remember, the safety of all learners from Grade R to Grade 7 is our primary task and responsibility.
- Make an appointment to speak to the class teacher after school only, no parent will be allowed an audience with a teacher during contact time. In the case of a life threatening emergency, parents are requested to speak directly to the Principal. All parents must be dressed in `day clothes`, an audience will not be granted to a parent clothed in pyjamas.
- Please do not be late to fetch your child. Our loved ones should not be left wondering where their parents are.
- Official times for opening and closing of the school gates. Gates open at 07.30 am and gates are close at 16:00 Monday to Thursday, Friday @ 14:00
- Late-coming by learners remains a challenge; please ensure that the learners are at school on time!
- Meetings with the school principal will transpire after an appointment has been made which was confirmed by Ms V Jacobs the secretary. Appointments will transpire from Monday – Thursday 09.00 am to 11.00 only.
FUNDRAISING
Voluntary contributions to the school fundraising is essential for the successful management of the school. The school is not spared of costs related to water, electricity, teacher salaries, stationery purchases for learners and maintenance of the school building. Your monetary contributions to the school will assist the school to maintain a healthy balance sheet.
Our first fundraiser is the Surfwalk in term 1 and it is crucial that we collect funds given the reduction of teacher posts at our school. We are reminding parents that in 2024, the schools lost 3 teacher posts.
SCHOOL UNIFORM
The school uniform remains the pride of the school. We wish to encourage all our parents to purchase the official uniform of the school. Please, come and speak to the secretary to order the uniform so that all our learners can be Proudly Delta!
METHOD OF COMMUNICATION TO PARENTS
Be reminded that newsletters are available on the school`s website every Friday URL:deltaprimary.org.za. Parents are able to register on the website to receive the newsletter. The newsletter informs all stakeholders of relevant information in relation to school activities.
Teachers will make use of a message book to keep parents updated about specific class information. All messages to teachers must be written in the child’s message book.
CONTACT DETAILS UPDATE
Parents please ensure that the teachers are given the correct learner information
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
“Let parents bequeath to their children not riches, but the spirit of reverence. Parents are the ultimate role models for children. Every word, movement and action has an effect. No other person or outside force has a greater influence on a child than the parent.“ – Carl Jung

END OF YEAR REFLECTION
Dear parents and learners of Delta Primary School. What an extremely busy and challenging year it has been for staff, learners and parents. The rapidly changing landscape within the school as well as constant changes and demands of education has pulled us in so many directions that we often quite literally found ourselves spinning to meet all the demands.
Nevertheless the resilience shown by the teaching staff as well as the support staff has made it possible to complete the academic year, with some bruising but a smile on our face knowing that we were able to complete the main task i.e teaching our children.
Many of our boys and girls understand that we demand a high standard of work from them, and they have risen to the occasion. Nevertheless, some learners remain a work in progress. We, however, still appreciate the fact that to some degree we have planted seeds of hope which in time we pray will germinate to yield positive results.
Parents, we wish to thank you for being our partners on this journey in spite of the difference of ideology, you understand that we only want the best for every child at Delta Primary School. Please take care of yourself as well as your loved ones. Enjoy a peaceful Advent and Christmas period, be safe on the roads.
DEPARTURE OF COLLEAGUES
The school bids farewell to Mr. Davids, who has been part of the staff since 2019. He enters into retirement and we wish him only the best of health in this new phase of his life. We extend thanks and appreciation to our contract teachers ( Ms. Moses, Ms. Hattjes, Mrs. Lottering, Mr. Baderoen)
LEARNER SAFETY
The festive season brings along a sense of relaxation and a break from the demands of our daily routine. In this regard I wish to advocate that we be vigilant with regards to the safety of our children, in particular when we are near water and open fires. Please take special care that no evil, harm or danger overcomes our children during the vacation period. Monitor their movements strictly and ensure that you, at all times, know where your child is. Boys and girls We are asking that you please take care of yourself and be obedient to your parents.
